Region Attracts Travel Writers in Droves in 2018
Travel bloggers and influencers have really discovered the Finger Lakes as a vacation destination and they are comparing it to some of the best locations in the world. In 2018 over twenty national publications mentioned Livingston County businesses, hotels, and restaurants.
Conde Nast Traveler published an article called “The Most Beautiful Place in Every U.S. State” and they chose Letchworth State Park to represent New York! Time called Letchworth “one of the 27 US destinations everyone should visit in their lifetime”. The park was also one of Yelp’s top picks for a leaf peeping trip.
Boston Events Insider and Men’s Journal both sent writers to check out the rafting trips lead by Adventure Calls Outfitters and the writer for the Boston publication gave it 4.5 stars for the best views and the easiest rafting.
In an article titled “Japan, Mexico City and More - destinations to visit in 2018”, Newsday included the Finger Lakes region as a “must visit” location. The author wrote that staying at the newly renovated Avon Inn “makes it possible to vacation like a celebrity without breaking the bank.”
Men’s Journal published an article that sung the praises of Hook & Spoon restaurant on the northern shore of Conesus Lake saying “If you aren’t sold on the indoor and outdoor dining, two full bars, lakefront campfire pit, frequent live music, and 16 boat slips for dock-and-diners, you’ll be sold on the piquant black bean burger and the weekly fishmonger’s pick.”
AFAR compiled a list for its readers of “The Best Hot Air Balloon Rides around the World”. They compared soaring with Balloons over Letchworth to floating over Albuquerque, New Mexico; Goreme, Turkey; and the Serengeti in Tanzania! “Hot air balloons, rivers, and ravines, anyone? Book a ride with Balloons Over Letchworth and you can glide over lush forests, dip down into gaping gorges, and hover beside impressive waterfalls in “the Grand Canyon of the East”—otherwise known as New York’s Letchworth State Park.”
Allegiance Bed and Breakfast in Mount Morris got a nod from the writers at Smarter Travel when they stayed there while following the Haunted History Trail of New York. Owners Steve & Glenda Luick are happy to tell visitors the story of the two mischievous spirits who have taken up permanent residence. Karen has been spotted ascending the stairs a few times with her straight gray hair and long dress and Raymond is known for being quite chatty.
For those looking to center themselves and find a quiet moment, Luxury Travel recommended the Abbey of the Genesee in their article “Top Destinations across the World for a Nature Immersion Getaway in 2019.” At the Abbey you can book a silent retreat in one of their secluded houses and immerse yourself in the quiet beauty of the landscape.
Several publications sent writers to the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo. Voted one of the top warplane museums and airshows in the country, the Livingston County historical venue aligned itself with the New York Historical Aviation Trail in 2018.
For 2019 the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council (FLRTC) has identified increasing the number of visitors to the area as a necessary part of continued economic growth. Attracting travel writers to the Finger Lakes region and Livingston County in particular, is an important step toward this end. As a result, the FLRTC and Livingston County Chamber & Tourism have made it a priority to continue hosting writers. They also partnered with a Manhattan-based public relations agency, Quinn, to showcase the Finger Lakes Region on a national level.
