Livingston County Chamber Celebrates Travel & Tourism Week

In recognition of Livingston County’s thriving travel and tourism industry, the Chamber has designated May 6-12th as Travel and Tourism Week in Livingston County, NY.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the most important drivers of the local economy, second only to agriculture.  Since Letchworth State Park was voted the #1 state park in the nation in 2015, tourism economic output has increased from $74.9 million to $84.3 million supporting more than 1,200 local jobs in many diverse industries ranging from accommodations, restaurants, and attractions, to retail.

Letchworth State Park Assistant Manager, Doug Kelly, says, “With approximately 800,000 people coming to Letchworth State Park annually visitors need fuel, food, and other necessities to support their trip. These purchases help stimulate the Livingston County economy.”

The value of visitors to Livingston County impacts every family.  Without tourists each household in the county would need to pay an additional $259 in taxes each year to make up for the lost revenue.  In 2016 visitors to the county generated over $3.2 million in county taxes and $2.9 million in state taxes.

Visitors to the Finger Lakes Region bring other benefits in addition to offsetting local taxes and spending money at tourism businesses.   According to Livingston County Tourism Director, Elissa Leuer, “Year round residents of Livingston County reap the benefits of a thriving tourism industry by having access to fine restaurants and other tourist attractions.”

“Livingston County has over 140 restaurants, 45 boutiques and shopping experiences, 10 golf courses, 7 craft beverage producers, and 12 art galleries and theaters.” adds Leuer, “all of which are supported by travelers and enjoyed by locals.”

The Livingston County Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is the official tourism promotion agency (TPA) for the county.
