Route 39
Avon, New York 14414
Built
in 1856-57 by the Genesee Valley Railroad to span
the Conesus Outlet. The 200-foot long, 12-foot wide
limestone bridge was part of the Rochester-Avon-Geneseo-Mount

Buffalo-Rochester-Corning and Hornell. The line
was electrified in 1907, with three runs daily between
Rochester and Mount Morris. In 1941, the Avon-Mount

Historical Society
The New York Heritage Wine Collection
2431 Dow Road
Piffard, New York 14533
(585) 243-2027
Contrary
to all the usual accounts, the first successful
commercial winegrower in New York State
was Samuel Warren of York, whose first vintage
was in 1832. By 1853 his production reached
more than 3,400 gallons, and his wines became
known from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
The
Town of York Historical Society has recently
purchased the 1830s Warren homestead, which
is now a local museum-in-the-making. To
help finance its restoration and development,
the Society is introducing a line of wines
based on 19th century grapes such as Warren
grew: The New York Heritage Collection.
